An up and coming film location – Amherst, Ohio By: Bill Kennedy

When you think of film locations for movies, you may think of exotic places such as Vancouver, Fiji or the deserts of the Sahara but not Amherst, Ohio. Well, you may be surprised to know that Amherst has been the filming location for three movies.

The latest movie to be filmed in and around Amherst is “The Bronze”, a comedy film directed by Bryan Buckley and written by Melissa Rauch and Winston Rauch. The plot is about a former gymnastics bronze medalist, Hope Annabelle Greggory (Melissa Rauch), who must fight for her local celebrity status when a young athlete’s star rises in town. Along with Melissa Rauch, the movie stars Gary Cole, Thomas Middleditch, Sebastian Stan, Cecily Strong, and Haley Lu Richardson. Stephanie Langhoff is the producer for Duplass Brothers Productions. Filming ended in late July and the movie is now in production. Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions acquired the rights for this movie in July and it will be released in 2015.

“The John Penton Story” is a full length documentary narrated by Grammy Winner Lyle Lovett. John Penton is a motorcycle pioneer whose life led to a long list of motorcycling accomplishments, international notoriety, and changed the motorcycling world forever. You can read more about John Penton and his accomplishments in the book entitled, “John Penton and The Off Road Motorcycle Revolution” written by Ed Youngblood.

In 2013, the “Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa” starring Johnny Knoxville did some guerilla filming at an Amherst School during a bingo night. This hidden camera film is the fourth in the Jackass film series.

Amherst, OH is known as the Sandstone Center of the World.  The former Town Hall is one of the landmarks in town.

Although it wasn’t filmed in Amherst, “Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle” references Hot Dog Heaven as Harold Lee (John Cho) and Kumar Patel (Kal Penn) go through a series of misadventures to find a White Castle restaurant. A stop at Hot Dog Heaven is a must when visiting Amherst. This movie was released in 2004 and is the first in a series of movies featuring Harold and Kumar.
