Hiking the Potomac Heritage Trail

A resident of Arlington, Virginia, Bill Kennedy serves as the president and CEO of Kennedy Technical Consulting Services, LLC. Previously, he worked with companies such as Geographic Information Services, Inc., and Raytheon Company. In his leisure time, Bill Kennedy enjoys hiking in and around Arlington.

Located near Arlington, the Potomac Heritage Trail links the parking lot for Theodore Roosevelt Island with Scott’s Run Nature Preserve. The trail encompasses nearly 11 miles of rugged hiking, following routes originally traveled by George Washington. It offers views of the shoreline of the Potomac River, Chain Bridge, waterfalls, Fort Marcy, and Turkey Run Park.

Those who wish to hike only part of the Potomac Heritage Trail can begin at various sites along the way, including the Gulf Branch Nature Center and North Glebe Road. Visitors to Fort Marcy can hike in either direction after exploring the fort, which originally served as one of 67 such fortifications defending Washington, D.C., in the Civil War.
